SIRS article: Activism Heats Up: A Proposed Solution to Global Warming

This guy, George Monbiot, promises (like a ton of other people) to cut the world’s greenhouse gas emissions by 90% if his plan is put into action.  He proposes a rationing situation in which people would have to choose what they would want to use their energy on and either buy or sell excess energy.  He believes that to do this first nations need to be given rations and then they can ration their population accordingly.  Unfortuntley this seems to be an idealistic approach and I do not think it will be successful, for if it would work we would be following this plan, or one like it, already.

SIRS article: Using Chemicals to Cut Global Warming May Damage Ozone Layer

This article says that scientists have a plan to inject sulfur compounds into the air to thicken the air with sun reflecting gases.  Their thinking is based on the cooling period that usually follows a volcanic eruption.  However other scientists warn that this may damage the actual ozone layer and delay the repairing of the hole in the antartic by up to 70 years.  It may also increase precipitation rates as it did in an eastern country during a massive volcanic explosion.  They also fear that it will drastically change the climate patterns and even though it was not stated in the article I fear that there would be some health hazards to having so much sulfur in the air, no matter how high up it may be.

I fear that the risks far outweigh the benifits and that this plan would cause more problems than it would solve. This is a good article for my group, prevention.  Using Chemicals to Cut Global Warming May Damage Ozone Layer

SIRS article: Global Warming Rushes Timing of Spring

This article talkes about how GW has hastened the biological clocks of many species and, as a result, made spring come earlier.  It talks about how plants start budding to early and then die from a last minute cold snap like we experienced last year.  The changing of a plants habits also greatly affect the well being of the animals that depend on it.  If the plant buds earlier than the animal coming back from their winter get away then the animals will starve.  The butterfly was noticed first and the cause of this was that the plants dried out too quick and killed off the catepillars.  Not only this but the pollen count is extremely high for a “normal” spring and allergies get bad too early for it to be spring.

Warmer Ocean Could Reduce Number of Atlantic Hurricane Landfalls

While the meaning of this brief article was a little sketchy to me I think I managed to get the gist of it.  It seems like it is trying to say that the warming of the oceans will decrease the vertical wind shear of the Atlantic ocean which is a major player in hurricanes.  This would result in less Atlantic hurricanes striking the U.S. However later it said that it would increase the vertical wind shear in both the pacific and indian oceans and that plays a major role in decreasing the VWS (vertical wind shear) in the Atlantic.  That came off to me as a pretty big trade off. I am not overly sure if that means that hurricanes would start hitting us from the pacific or just make the ones that do occur there worse.

While I do not know enough about hurricanes it seems to me that if we would only trade which direction the hurricanes came at us from then GW does not affect the U.S. too much.  However if it makes the ones that occur in the pacific worse and spell more danger for the nations that fall victim to those hurricanes than GW affects the world in a very negative way.

The other side of the discussion could be that because GW is reducing the number of hurricanes hitting the U.S. with no downsides than GW has a very positive effect.

This article should help the groups working on the effects and how bad it is.

GW wreaks havoc w/nature

Essentially this article is saying that because GW is occuring that the rise in temperature will cause many species to go extinct. Not only for the soul purpose that they cannot live in such extreme temperatures but because many are dependent on the others for survival in addition to their habitats which could also drastically change.  It also states that not only would the planet lose a large amount of its animal population but that the survivors would have to move their regions and most often it will be towards one of the poles.  If this is the case then the areas closest to the equator could possibly become a Mars-like habitat.

This is a good article for the group that is doing its portion of the documentary on effects on the world.  It provides good factual and logical suppport for what is happening or could potentially happen. The group which is covering how bad GW is or is it real, or anything of that nature, could use this to also strengthen or provide an argument for their documentary section.

Personally I have a bias to this article, because I do not believe that GW is real at all, which points me to say that it is all opinions and they cannot support the fact that the world will see these temperature rises.  If that small detail cannot be addressed then the whole idea of the world losing a great portion of its animal and plant species is completely out of the question.
